Presentation of the course

The intensive course takes place from March 12th – March 15th 2018 at The Department of Nursing, Aalborg, University College of Northern Denmark (UCN). The language of instruction is English. English will also be used in group work, discussions, etc.

In the coming years the Nordic countries will face an increasing number of elderly over 70 years, and there is a political discourse that welfare technology can provide cost effective solutions to the benefit of future citizens. At the same time there is a pressure on patient safety and on the primary sector, due to shorter hospital stay for each patient. It is evident that training seems to give citizens the tools to strengthen their increase body awareness and to some extent prevent worsening of the disease.  So the elderly are given a new and very active role which raises ethical questions and demands advanced competences in nursing. Furthermore the focus in nursing is to offer supportive care in a new context where still more technology is involved.

Content

Theme welfare technology means in this course innovation, e-learning, blog and social media methods both in education and learning. A voice of citizens will be present during the course. In teaching also classroom lecturing, (online-lectures), group work, study visit and round table discussion. To keep the focus on the changing role of the elderly a Danish NGO “Danage” will represent the perspective of the elderly. Lectures from the Nordic countries will do the teaching.

Purpose

The aim of the course is to develop nursing students competences to use welfare technology in an innovative way. Furthermore to improve quality of care, ethics and to achieve better self-care satisfaction and effiency in primary health care.

The learning outcomes

The students will develop competences and a deeper understandig of:

  • What welfare technology can be, and how it can be used in living environment of elderly citizens
  • Different perspectives which can be observed from the citizens, spouses, network, family and nurses
  • Critical reflections on recourses, patient safety and ethical considerations.
  • Competences in using welfare technology in living environment of elderly citizens
  • Creating new ideas and possibilities (innovation) for future home care nursing.
  • Possibilities, challenges and impacts of professional nursing practice and competences connected to welfare technology

Prerequisite for Participation of the 3 ECTS course

The intensive course is offered to nursing students on their 2nd or 3rd year of study

As the part of this course Students have to make Preliminary, during and after the course Assignments.

 

Course Certificate

The students will after approval of the home university receive a Certicificate of Attendance from UCN.
